LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday said Supreme Court judges should allow the country to move forward as she launched a salvo against the Supreme Court’s verdict allowing.
“I would like to request the SC judges to let the country function,” Maryam said while addressing an event in Lahore.
She accused the Supreme Court justices of rewriting the Constitution to bring one man back into mainstream politics. “Who are these (people) who don’t like the country making progress and rewriting the constitution,” she said.
In a major legal victory for the PTI, the SC ruled on July 12 that the party was eligible for allotment of reserved seats.
The decision not only paved the way for PTI’s return to Parliament, which was kicked out of the February 8 polls due to the ECP’s December 2023 decision, but also increased pressure on the coalition alliance as the verdict will change the composition. National Assembly.
The Punjab Chief Minister said that the Supreme Court had given relief to the PTI which the party had not even asked for.
SC judges gave them 15 days to submit their affidavits about their PTI affiliation, despite the fact that they had already submitted documents confirming their allegiance to another party, she said.
“We’re not going to let it be a cakewalk for you. This government will complete its five-year term. Anyone who tries to create political instability will be met with iron hands,” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader warned.
“It was said that judgments were given according to their conscience,” Maryam noted, adding that decisions should be according to the constitution and not according to a person’s conscience.
She said that the one they were trying to bring back was the nation’s criminal.
The PML-N leader said that a group of few people issued such orders which stopped the development process. She also said that the law and the constitution do not allow floor crossing, while “the SC judge’s decision said you can commit floor crossing”.
