KARACHI: Awaam Pakistan Chairman Miftah Ismail has announced his intention to file a petition against K-Electric, highlighting the steep 350% increase in electricity rates since 2015.
At a protest outside the K-Electric headquarters, Ismail mocked the current government’s handling of electricity tariffs and the burden it places on common citizens.
Ismail pointed out that although the Pakistan People’s Party had promised to provide 300 units of free electricity, the reality was completely different.
“Government should not give free electricity per unit, but if the rate is right, whose salaries have increased by 350 percent?” he asked.
He further argued that if ordinary citizens are not getting free electricity, no one else should be getting it either.
“We are not vandals but we will go and present our case to everyone,” he declared, trusting the media to highlight the plight of the common man while presenting the government’s stance on the issue.
“Why does load shedding not lower the bill?” Ismail questioned and criticized the ongoing power outages and their impact on citizens. He stressed that if there is a 12-hour relief, the total bill should be lower.
Ismail also targeted the government’s fiscal policy, highlighting the 37% tax charged on commercial electricity consumption and increased government spending.
“Expenditure of the Senate and the National Assembly has been increased,” he noted, urging the government not to impose additional taxes on domestic consumers.
