England’s Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from international cricket, declaring that it’s the right time for him to step away. The 37-year-old all-rounder, who was not included in the squad for the upcoming series against Australia, shared that he’s ready to step down from all formats of the game.
Having already retired from Test cricket in September 2021, Moeen reflected on his career, saying, “I’m incredibly proud. When you start out, you never know how many games you’ll end up playing. To have played nearly 300 matches is something special. My early years were focused on Test cricket, but I’ve always tried to be realistic. I could keep pushing to play for England again, but I understand that the team needs to move forward.”
Moeen acknowledged that while he still feels capable of playing, it’s about accepting the team’s need for evolution. “People sometimes overlook the impact of those crucial runs or wickets, but I always aimed to make a difference. I’m content knowing that I contributed both on and off the field,” he added.
Though retiring from international cricket, Moeen will continue to play in franchise leagues and is looking forward to coaching in the future.
