Federal government has rejected the request of several provincial governments to suspend access to social media platforms for a few days during Muharram ul Haram.
Provincial authorities have asked for the temporary suspension of six social media apps during Muharram for about a week due to security concerns.
During Muharram, faithful marches are held across the country, while religious scholars address large gatherings amid tight security, with thousands of law enforcement agencies deployed to ensure security throughout the month.
According to sources in the Ministry of Interior, social media websites will not be blocked during the holy month, believing that security will be ensured.
“Security should be more proactive and effective,” the minister said, adding that mobile signals would be blocked at rally and demonstration sites.
News reported on Friday that the Punjab government has given reasons for spreading hate material and misinformation.
According to a letter from the Punjab Home Ministry, a meeting of the Cabinet Standing Committee on Law and Order has been held to review the security and administrative arrangements for Muharram.
To prevent sectarian violence, it was decided to suspend social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram from 6 Muharram to 11 Muharram to prevent the spread of hateful material and misinformation.
