Wimbledon: British tennis star Andy Murray said he is ready to retire from tennis along with his brother Jamie, John Peers and Rinky Hijikata after losing 7-6(6), 6-4 in the 2024 Wimbledon men’s doubles.
Murray underwent back surgery earlier last month, but made his men’s singles debut earlier this week as he looked to play men’s doubles and mixed doubles in fresh Wimbledon form.
After losing in the men’s doubles, the 37-year-old legend closed his famous career on the big screen with Wimbledon. Shown. The likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and more appear in the video, which captures the 37-year-old’s memorable moments on court.
“That’s not what I asked,” Murray said. “When I decided to play singles, the club talked to me and said they wanted to do something after one of my matches here.
“I thank them for what they did. I don’t know, it feels like it’s over. I don’t know if I deserve it or not. But they did a great job.”
He said it was time to retire and he would play if it was up to him, but his body did not allow him to play the way he used to.
“I’m ready to finish playing,” he said. “I don’t want to be like that. Like I said, I want to play forever. But now it’s a doubles match that’s not physically demanding, but it’s very difficult for me.
“My serve speed and everything is far from where it used to be. I’m sure the timing will come back after I recover from the injury and everything.
Now I’m ready to finish playing because I can’t play at the level I want to play. I know now is the time. Yes, I’m ready.”
Andy Murray will now play Marcelo Arevalo and Zhang Shuai on Saturday with Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon.
