LONDON: Former Pakistan cricketer Mushtaq Ahmed has joined the England U19 squad by signing a contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Mushtaq, 53, who held the role of spin bowling coach for England (2008-2014), West Indies (2018-19) and Pakistan (2020-22), also held the position of bowling consultant for the Pakistan team (2014-16). .
His last stint was with the Bangladesh cricket team where he served as the bowling coach.
Mushtaq will bring a wealth of experience to the England U19 team and the young English spinners will be able to learn a lot from the legendary wrist spinner.
As part of his short-term deal, Mushtaq wants to make the most of the opportunity he is getting and will try to contribute to the development of young talent during his tenure.
Mushtaq has worked with the ECB before and is satisfied with their arrangements. He also confirmed that he was not contacted by any other cricket board during that time.
The England U19 team will play a two-test series against Sri Lanka U19, which is scheduled to begin on July 8.
Mushtaq took 185 wickets in 52 Tests at an average of 32.97, while he also claimed 161 wickets in 144 ODIs for Pakistan.
He was instrumental in guiding Imran’s Tigers to World Cup glory in 1992, memorably catching Graeme Hick with one of his googlies in the final.
