LAHORE: PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif has decided to address a public rally at Umm-e-Takbeer on the day he will once again assume the post of party president after seven years.
According to sources, more than 5,000 PML-N workers and office workers have reached Lahore for the power show.
The three-time former prime minister will be elected PML-N president at the party’s general council meeting on May 28.
It was decided that the general council meeting would be a show of strength by the PML-N.
Nawaz Sharif will again address the party workers. After becoming party president on May 28, he will speak on organizational and constitutional issues.
May 28 was carefully chosen as the day observed as Youm-e-Takbeer to commemorate the historic nuclear test conducted by Pakistan in 1998 when Nawaz Sharif was the Prime Minister.
Earlier, the Punjab unit of PML-N unanimously decided to ask the elder Sharif to lead the party once again.
As a result of the controversial court order, Mian Nawaz Sharif has ceased to be the president of PML-N. The pressure was over and he was released. PML-N will move forward in its leadership,” PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah said after the decision was taken.
“Nawaz Sharif has been asked to take charge of PML-N again,” he said.
He said that the former prime minister was forcibly removed from the party in 2017.
According to insiders, it was decided to separate the organization and the government to make the party more vibrant.
Party insiders said the elder Sharif will embark on a national tour after taking charge of the party to repair the battered PML-N vote bank.
Nawaz Sharif will visit four provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan after May 28.
The party’s general council meeting will be held at a private hotel instead of the Model City Secretariat due to bad weather.
