SWAT: Human rights activists and transgender community on Tuesday emphasized the urgent need for legislative reforms and institutional support to combat discrimination against transgender individuals.
A convention was held organized by the Awami Welfare Society and supported by the Coalition for Inclusive Pakistan’s (CIP) Ramp Project in the Swat Press Club.
Apart from the various line departments and stakeholders, civil society members, the transgender community, the Election Commission Officer, the jail superintendent, and the social welfare officer participated in the event.
Dr. Yasmin Gul, the Project Coordinator of the AWS, while speaking about her project’s efforts for human rights, including transgender people and people with disabilities, said, “We aim to dismantle the discriminatory barriers that hinder the progress of transgender individuals.”
Superintendent of District Jail Swat, Ayub Bacha, echoed a sentiment of solidarity, affirming, “It is imperative that we, as a society, pledge to ensure the fundamental rights and dignity of transgender individuals.”
He said that the government established separate rooms with facilities for the transgender community inside jails.
Salim Zada, the Social Welfare Officer, said that the institutions stood committed to rectifying the systemic injustices faced by transgender communities.
Election Officer Mohammad Imran Khan echoed their sentiments, stating, “Transgender individuals deserve equal opportunities and representation in all facets of society.”
Consultant Syed Jamal Shah underscored the urgency of the matter, stating that it was high time to translate for collective resolve into actionable policies that safeguard the rights and dignity of transgender communities.
He also presented a Charter of Demand for Transgender People as a poignant document encapsulating the aspirations and struggles of transgender individuals in the Swat district.
“Our demands reflect the dire need for legislative reforms and institutional support to combat discrimination and ensure the inclusion of transgender individuals in every sphere of society,” he said, adding, “Today marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards equality and acceptance. Let us forge ahead, united in our pursuit of a more just and inclusive society for all.”
