ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that no institution has the power to rewrite the constitution.
Addressing a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, chaired by Rana Aradat Sharif, the Minister expressed strong support for the proposed amendments to the 2017 Electoral Act.
“We cannot allow any institution to rewrite the constitution. The courts interpret the law, but they don’t have the power to change it,” Tarar said.
He stressed the requirement for elected members to join a political party within three days, noting that once a party joins, it becomes irrevocable.
In contrast, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed members opposed the bill.
Shahida Akhtar Ali emphasized the need to strive for the rule of constitution and law.
“We take an oath to legislate for the public good. Legislation against IPPs would be better. The Electoral Commission has always been caught in the middle,” she noted.
The committee’s discussions reflected concerns about the potential implications of the amendments and called for thorough scrutiny and government transparency in legislative changes.
