SEOUL: The exercise involved troops within range of the “enemy’s capital,” state media said, referring to Seoul, South Korea’s capital, adding that it “accomplished important military missions for war deterrence.”
The move comes as the South Korean and US militaries began a spring training exercise known as Exercise Freedom Shield on Monday with double the number of troops compared to last year.
Seoul’s Defense Minister Shin Won-sik visited the Capital Defense Command on Thursday and ordered a decisive response should North Korea carry out provocations aimed at the capital. Earlier this week, North Korean state media reported that Kim was inspecting the field training of soldiers at a major military operating base in the country’s western region.
