Athens: Greece’s coastguard says it has found the body of a man believed to have drowned when a migrant boat capsized near the island of Samos on Sunday.
25 people described as “foreigners” were reportedly found in a “semi-submersible” and rescued from the sea west of the South Aegean island.
According to the Coast Guard, the medical situation has been transferred to the port of Wati.
The search for the missing person is being carried out with the help of Frontex, the border agency of the European Union.
State-run ERT TV reported that four people were missing.
Greece has seen an increase in undocumented migrants this year.
More than 7,000 people arrived in January and February, an increase of 184 percent compared to 2023, according to official figures.
The country of 10.4 million people has received more than 460,000 asylum applications since 2013, including more than 12,500 this year.
The islands in the northeastern Aegean Sea are one of the gateways for many asylum seekers fleeing conflict or poverty and hoping to enter the European Union.
In June 2023, 82 people were killed and hundreds were missing when a migrant trailer overturned on the coast of Pylos.
Several investigations into the disaster are still ongoing, and some NGOs have accused the Greek coastguard of obstructing efforts to help migrants.
