RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Armed Forces on Thursday paid tribute to the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving as UN peacekeepers in conflict-affected countries of the world on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
“Today, Pakistan joins the international community in commemorating International Peacekeeping Day, honoring the brave men and women who have served in UN peacekeeping missions,” Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
ISPR said that Pakistan is one of the contributors to UN peacekeeping, with around 3,000 peacekeepers currently deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Abyei, Central African Republic, Cyprus, Western Sahara and Somalia.
Also, since 1960, Pakistan has reportedly contributed 235,000 troops to UN peacekeeping operations in 48 UN missions in 29 countries, in almost every climate of the world.
Our peacekeepers have shown extraordinary courage, skill and commitment to promote peace and stability in conflict-affected areas. A total of 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the highest sacrifice in this regard.” he said.
“Pakistan also remains committed to the United Nations Gender Equality Strategy (UGPS) for greater representation of women’s clothing in the Secretary-General’s initiative for Peace (A4P), which seeks to improve the effectiveness, coherence and accountability of UN peacekeeping operations.
According to ISPR, Pakistan’s contribution to UN peacekeeping is proof of our country’s commitment to international peace and security, and Pakistan’s peacekeeping forces will continue to empower local communities in troubled areas.
