United Nations: Pakistan has called on the Security Council of the United Nations General Assembly to review and advise on Palestine’s application for full membership in the United Nations to remedy the historical injustice against the Palestinian people.
The meeting was called under the “veto initiative” – the informal name of the resolution passed by Parliament in April 2022 entitled “Permanent Mandate for General Assembly Debate on Security Council Veto Events”.
The General Assembly has the right to hold within 10 working days after the Council vetoes, according to the measure, which was brought forward after the frequent use of the Council veto and other countermeasures.
Palestine is a ‘permanent observer state’ in the United Nations, which means that it can participate in all UN affairs except for voting on resolutions and draft resolutions in the main body of the organization.
In his statement, Pakistan’s representative said: “The veto against Palestinian recognition undermines the credibility of the assurances given in support of the two-state solution.
“Current diplomacy for peace in Palestine, Israel and the region will be greatly enhanced if the veto is overturned and the Palestinian Authority is accepted into the United Nations as recommended by the Security Council.”
Ambassador Akram appealed to the United Nations and the international community for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza; guarantee unrestricted access to humanitarian aid; prevent further escalation of conflict; provide international protection for Palestine; revive the peace process and hold Israel accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
As the Secretary General of the United Nations has said, it threatens to “intensify intolerably” and attack the city of Rafah, which will have a severe impact on the Palestinians in Gaza.
Ambassador Akram highlighted the plight of Palestinians over the past seven decades, including the denial of self-determination, expulsion from their homeland, and prolonged and brutal foreign occupation.
Pakistan’s representative condemned Israel for its recent war crimes in Gaza, which have resulted in the deaths of more than 35,000 Palestinian civilians, illegal bombings and obstruction of humanitarian aid.
Ambassador Akram also attacked the representative of Israel for making harsh accusations against the Islamic state.
