Islamabad: Senior politician and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Bilal Azhar Kiani on Thursday expressed hope for solar power development in Pakistan and said the country is expected to achieve a solar power capacity of 2,000 mega watts (MW) by the end of the year. day this fiscal year.
Kiani attributed the success of solar energy to the increase in the number of net metering connections, which has been “many” this year.
In an interview with a private news channel, he said that the federal government has no plans to make net metering and there will be no change in the net metering policy.
He also said that any policy changes do not apply to consumers who have installed solar systems on their homes.
Highlighting the benefits of solar energy, the MNA said that anyone who installs a solar meter with net metering connection can pay back their investment in a year and a half, making it an attractive proposition.
According to electricity distribution statistics, the installation of off-grid solar systems has reached 3,000 MW, while the national metering system receives approximately 2,000 MW through net metering.
Kiani praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s solar energy policy, which resulted in an increase in net capacity from 500 MW to 2,000 MW.
In response to a question, Kiani said that the issue of net metering was not discussed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), instead he proposed reforms in the energy sector.
This development is a positive step towards increasing Pakistan’s use of renewable energy sources and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
