Islamabad: Pakistan has moved up to Tier-1 (Role Modeling) and is now among the top 40 countries in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024 released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a significant improvement from the previous 79th position.
This progress reflects Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening national cyber security, particularly in the IT and telecommunications sectors. The Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other stakeholders were key drivers of this success.
Major initiatives to enhance cyber security include the Cyber Security Policy, CERT Rules, Critical Telecommunications Data and Infrastructure Security Regulations (CTDISR), Cyber Security Strategy and regular cyber security audits across the telecommunications sector. In addition, the establishment of the National Telecommunications Security Operations Center (SOC) and the National Telecommunications CERT further strengthened the country’s security posture through information sharing, incident resolution and rapid response coordination.
These efforts, combined with local telecom operators’ adherence to international cyber security standards, have strengthened Pakistan’s defenses against cyber threats. MoITT and PTA remain committed to ensuring a secure and resilient cyberspace for Pakistan.
