LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has backed away from his earlier strong stand by calling for the 2024 cricket team to withdraw from the recent T20 World Cup.
The Pakistani team has faced tough competition, losing two out of three matches and is now teetering on the brink of an early exit.
Earlier in the week, Naqvi openly criticized his team after the defeat against India, expressing disappointment and saying that major changes were needed.
He said the team’s poor performance indicated the need for a major overhaul, not a minor fix. “A minor operation seemed to work, but after this poor performance, I now believe that a major operation is necessary. Soon, people will see major renovations,” said Naqvi.
Despite his earlier comments, Naqvi has urged fans to support the team and wait for the tournament to end.
Speaking to local media outside Parliament House on Wednesday, he said discussions were still ongoing and it was too early to learn specifics at this time.
“The meeting is ongoing and it is not appropriate to discuss the matter further,” Naqvi said.
When asked about possible action after the team’s poor performance, Naqvi asked for patience and said there are still games to be played at the league stage.
Naqvi stressed the importance of national support for the team and said “we have to move forward” with the team now.
He said the team needed the support of the country and everyone wished them success as the tournament progressed.
