Islamabad: Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam said that global warming is severely affecting glaciers, ecosystems, people’s lives and livelihoods in mountainous regions around the world.
However, solving the challenges of rapid melting of glaciers, loss of ecosystems and protecting lives and livelihoods will not be possible unless the global community comes together to address the drivers of global warming, especially greenhouse gas emissions.
Presiding over a meeting with the Italian non-governmental organization EvK2CNR here on Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator said that the increase in temperature in mountainous areas including Pakistan is due to seasonal changes in weather patterns, melting of glaciers, thawing and subsidence of permafrost. extent and duration of snow cover.
As a result, water flows and their availability for industry, domestic use and agriculture are reduced and increasingly unreliable.
“Initiatives that can help slow down global warming are urgently needed to overcome the negative impact of climate change on glaciers, mountains, ecosystems, waterways, agriculture, public health and education,” said Romina Khurshid Alam.
Many glaciers in the world have been melting rapidly since the early 1900s. Human activity is at the heart of this phenomenon. In particular, since the industrial revolution, emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases have increased at the poles, causing glaciers to melt faster, escape to the sea, and retreat on land.
He stressed the importance of using sustainable means of production and consumption to combat climate change and its impact on various socio-economic sectors, especially water, agriculture, energy, health and education.
Romina Khurshid Alam said in the meeting that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is serious about improving Pakistan’s environmental sustainability and climate resilience in all socio-economic sectors and ordered his team to leave no stone unturned to prevent environmental degradation and improve the country’s resilience. against the devastating effects of climate change.
