On Sunday, which marked International Literacy Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a nationwide education emergency, calling for a united effort from both the private sector and civil organizations to bolster the country’s education system.
In his message, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing education, aiming to build a more informed and sustainable nation. He highlighted the significance of International Literacy Day, observed on September 8, as a reminder of literacy’s vital role in creating a just, peaceful, and sustainable society.
UNESCO’s recent reports show that lack of access to education remains a major challenge globally, with three out of four children in developing countries unable to read a basic text by age ten, and 754 million adults, predominantly women, still illiterate.
“To address these issues, we’ve declared an educational emergency across the country, launched an enrollment campaign, and initiated mid-day meal programs for students,” the Prime Minister stated. He described literacy not just as reading and writing but as a gateway to empowerment, economic opportunities, and active societal participation.
To combat dropout rates and promote educational completion, the government has introduced scholarships and other incentives. PM Sharif stressed the importance of integrating technology into education to equip youth for the digital economy, and called for collaboration with the private sector and civil society to link education with employment opportunities.
Earlier this year, PM Shehbaz announced a similar education emergency to tackle the challenge of 26 million out-of-school children. “We will address this issue with determination and the support of all provinces,” he said, pledging to personally oversee the program and work with chief ministers from across the political spectrum.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the establishment of the Pakistan Education Endowment Fund, aimed at supporting children from low-income families in pursuing higher education. He announced a 20% quota for youth from Balochistan under this fund and praised Oxford Union President Israr Khan Kakar for his recent election, marking a historic achievement for Pakistan.
PM Shehbaz concluded with hope for the continued success of young leaders like Kakar, expressing confidence that their achievements would bring pride to Pakistan.
