LAHORE: The leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has chosen to transfer Marriyum Aurangzeb, the party’s communications secretary, to the Punjab Assembly in order to support Maryam Nawaz in the event that she is elected chief minister.
The Punjab Assembly will hold its first session on Friday, or today, following the general elections on February 8. During that session, the newly elected members will be sworn in.
Following discussions, President Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif came to this decision. Rather than go back to the National Assembly, they agreed that she would take an oath as an MPA in the Punjab Assembly today.
Marriyum worked as the federal communications minister for a number of years before being elected twice to the National Assembly on a reserved seat. She will take the oath of office as an MPA in the Punjab Assembly for the first time.
The PML-N, which has a comfortable majority in the provincial legislature, has begun preparing Maryam for the chief minister position even though elections for the Punjab Assembly’s leader of the House have not yet taken place.
Maryam presided over a parliamentary gathering earlier this week at the Jati Umra in Lahore that drew in 218 MPAs from Punjab, including independents, PML-N MPAs, and those nominated for reserved seats. According to the sources, Maryam chaired the aforementioned meeting.
There were around 22 independent members who joined the PML-N after the elections, 57 women nominated for reserved seats, and 137 successful PML-N candidates, according to the sources.
