ISLAMABAD: Senior leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) have opposed the government’s decision to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to sources, PPP leaders have advised the leadership to openly oppose the decision. Some PPP leaders expressed surprise at Atta Tarar’s statement of taking the confidence of allies.
Senior PPP officials said they were not aware of the trust and that their party did not support the government’s decision.
Farhatullah Babar opposed the decision to ban PTI.
Meanwhile, ANP Senator Arbab Umar Farooq Kasi said that the decision to ban political parties cannot be supported in a democratic era.
He urged political parties to strengthen the democratic process instead of engaging in foot-dragging.
“It is the government’s responsibility to prevent the derailment of the democratic system. The solution to the current crisis in the country is purely political and the use of force will only increase instability,” he added.
Earlier on Monday, Information Minister Atta Tarar said the ruling coalition has decided to proceed with banning the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Addressing a press conference here, he said that the federal government would file a case to ban PTI. The government should keep the current situation in mind before taking a step in this regard, he added.
“PTI and the country cannot go together,” he stated categorically.
