ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday stressed the need to discourage the spread of fake news and disinformation by promoting a culture of fact-checking and information verification.
The President expressed these views while talking to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Chairman Muhammad Saleem who called on him and presented the PEMRA Report 2021-23 at Aiwan-e-Sadr, President Press Wing Secretariat said in a press release.
In an interview with PEMRA Chairman, the President said that modern communication technologies have opened up new challenges and the media must play a responsible and constructive role in shaping public opinion.
He further emphasized that a code of conduct regarding the spread of disinformation and propaganda should be followed.
President Zardari also emphasized the need to improve the capacity of PEMRA by adopting modern tools and technology and building a pool of talented human resources.
He believed that apart from promoting a soft image of the country, the media should also raise awareness about socio-economic issues.
PEMRA Chairman briefed the [resident on the role and performance of PEMRA in regulating and developing the media landscape in the country.
The President confirmed his support for the further strengthening of PEMRA.
