Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari said global efforts are needed to tackle climate change by using clean technology, creating forests and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He said global warming and climate change are affecting glaciers, causing water shortages, and global support is needed to overcome these challenges.
The President made these comments in an interview with Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan / COP 29 appointed President Mukhtar Babayev at Aiwan-e-Sadr. Azerbaijan will host the 29th Conference on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29) in Baku in January 2024, and the Minister, appointed as the President of COP 29, came here to invite the President to the conference.
Welcoming the minister, the President congratulated Azerbaijan on winning the bid to host COP 29 and expressed the hope that COP 29 will determine new collective goals for climate finance that will help developing countries meet their climate finance needs. He said, Pakistan has planted more than hundreds of thousands of hectares of mangrove forest that can help protect the environment, apart from getting carbon credits for Pakistan.
The President said that Pakistan values relations with Azerbaijan and wants to further expand bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest. Both brothers called for more cooperation, bilateral exchanges and people-to-people contacts to further strengthen ties between the two countries.
Mr. Mukhtar Babayev said it is necessary to further develop bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, especially in the field of tourism and culture. He also sent an invitation to the President to attend COP 29 in Baku in November 2024.
The President expressed his hope for the success of COP 29 and hopes that Azerbaijan will play its role in securing the interests of developing countries in meeting the needs of climate adaptation financing.
