ISLAMABAD: Coordinator PM Romina Khurshid Alam said that chess is recognized globally for its benefits in improving cognitive ability and critical thinking among players. However, the promotion of chess at various levels, including the level of education, can go a long way in developing interest and engagement among people of all ages to promote the game in the country.
Mian Sultan Khan, Chief Guest of the Pakistan National Chess Championship event in Pakistan said: “Chess is a classic game that has been around for centuries and is played by millions of people around the world. This game of strategy and tactics features two players, each controlling 16 pieces , competing to capture the opponent’s king.”
The event was organized by Headstart School Gulmohar Campus in Islamabad on Wednesday to encourage students to develop cognitive skills and critical thinking skills.
Romina Khurshid Alam said that the championship organized by more than 140 participants from Pakistan region, is an important container to develop chess and nurture young talent.
The Prime Minister’s National Mental Sports Initiative reflects the government’s commitment to promote intellectual development and mental agility, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator said.
“Our government has chosen GOVERNMENT HELP and we are uniting awareness and sustainability of climate change through educational programs, sports, art and policy, planning and climate finance,” said Romina Khurshid Alam.
Romina Khurshid Alam: “Kusht is not only a game of skill and mind, but also a cultural phenomenon rich with a deep history and an important competitive scene. Players of all ages and skill levels enjoy challenges and opportunities for creative and strategic thinking.”
Ms. Khurshid Alam encouraged the development of the national chess game by establishing local chess clubs in the country where players meet regularly to play, learn and compete. These clubs can offer structured tournaments, training sessions and social gatherings centered around chess.
In addition, incorporating chess into the school curriculum or after-school programs and creating a chess club at school can help students develop critical thinking, concentration, and social skills while instilling a love of the game.
Earlier, highlighting the legacy of the first chess grandmaster in Asia, Prime Minister Coordinator Romina Khurshid said Mian Sultan Khan is a leading figure in the field of chess and represents the subcontinent by inspiring players in Pakistan and Asia in the early 20th century.
He said that the efforts of the Pakistan Kusht Federation to get the title of Grandmaster for Mian Sultan Khan at the beginning of 2024 is commendable.
The Prime Minister’s coordinator asked all stakeholders to extend their full support to the development of chess and other mental sports in Pakistan, youth development and international representation.
