Lille: Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said he was happy to work with Kylian Mbappe after the superstar forward played his last game for the club in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Lyon.
Mbappe bid farewell to PSG before a surprise move to Real Madrid, but failed to add 256 goals to his club record on the night alongside Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz.
Dembele and Ruiz found the net in the first half as PSG denied Lyon a comeback attempt after the break after Jake O’Brien’s strike reduced the deficit.
PSG, the most successful team in French Cup history, have won the trophy 15 times, seven times in the last decade and four times since Mbappe was signed from Monaco as a teenager in 2017.
Victory enabled PSG to complete a domestic league and cup double in Luis Enrique’s first season as manager, but their campaign was overshadowed by Borussia Dortmund’s semi-final exit from the Champions League.
“We played very well in the final. We played strong and we were good on the ball,” said Luis Enrique.
“I think we have had a really good season. We want to stay another week and have no rest, but that’s life,” he said.
We will come back stronger next season and sign more hungry players who want to win.”
He said of Mbappe’s departure: “I think I’ve been lucky to coach Kylian, but it’s been a difficult season for him because it’s always difficult to say goodbye to what he’s achieved after seven years.
