ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Tuesday expressed his party’s expectation that the judiciary will allocate reserved seats in accordance with the law.
Interacting with the media at the Supreme Court premises, Gohar pointed out that Article 51 stipulates that each political party can receive reserved seats in proportion to the number of general seats it has won.
Despite this provision, 67 seats reserved for women and 11 for minorities were not allotted to the PTI-SIC [alliance], he noted.
He explained that PTI submitted nomination papers for all its candidates in December 2023 under strict conditions and awarded tickets to 828 candidates in 859 constituencies.
Gohar said the successful PTI-backed candidates later joined the Sunni Ittehad Council under the alliance.
He expressed hope for the Supreme Court’s decision within two to three days and reposed confidence in the 13 judges of the apex court.
Gohar mentioned that the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been suspended due to this issue.
PTI leader Salman Akram Raja expressed similar views and criticized attempts to subvert public opinion and urged the court to expeditiously rule on PTI’s rights.
Sahibzada Hamid Raza of the Sunni Ittehad Council asserted their democratic right to protest.
Addressing the judges, he highlighted the alleged mishandling by the Election Commission and expressed confidence in a favorable result following their compliance with PTI founder Imran Khan’s instructions.
