Following the approval of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the provincial government has introduced free WiFi services at 50 points in Lahore under a pilot project.
Free WiFi launched in Lahore (50 points). The rest of Lahore was also completed. Thank God! “We promise, we deliver.”
In a high-level meeting with Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) officials last month, the Prime Minister promised to implement a free WiFi pilot project in Lahore.
According to media reports, PIBT has been tasked with rebuilding existing infrastructure such as peak points.
This initiative aims to provide free WiFi access in various public places.
CM Maryam also instructed the IT department staff to start better services in educational institutions, airports, train stations and bus stands. A total of 516 places in Lahore will provide free WiFi services.
Free WiFi services in Lahore and other cities were launched by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in 2013. But the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government shut down the service for non-payment of fees to internet providers.
Initially Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) operated this service but now it is controlled by PITB.
The expected revival of this service will offer significant benefits to the public by improving internet access in critical areas and simplifying communication channels.
