RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been shifted from Adiala jail to Lahore and is to be produced before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in cases related to the May 9 riots, sources said on Monday.
Jail sources said Qureshi was taken to Lahore in the early hours of the morning amid tight security, where he will be produced before an anti-terrorism court set up at Kot Lakhpat jail.
Several cases related to the May 9 riots are filed against him in Lahore.
Lawyer Barrister Taimur Malik confirmed that ATC Lahore judges will hear the cases in Kot Lakhpat Jail on May 9 and the PTI leader will appear in court today.
Qureshi, already jailed in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail in several cases, was implicated in eight more cases in connection with the May 9 May 26 mayhem.
Apart from this case, a special court set up under the Official Secrets Act on January 30 sentenced Qureshi to 10 years in jail in the cipher case.
The May 9 riots were triggered almost across the country after ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in a £190 million settlement case. Hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders were jailed last year for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations.
During the protests, miscreants targeted civilian and military installations, including — Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The army called May 9 “Black Day” and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.
