ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has collected over Rs 76 million from ticketless passengers during the last six months with the help of railway police and train staff.
“Around 59,143 passengers found their way without tickets in various trains and collected the said amount from them which is deposited in the official bank account of the ministry,” ministry sources told APP.
They said it was not the first time large-scale action was taken against ticketless passengers, adding that these types of raids were taking place on a daily basis.
Sources said traveling without a ticket was illegal and those caught without a ticket were charged the ticket price for the entire train journey in addition to the fine. Those who do not pay are handed over to the railway police.
To a question, they said that the Pakistan Railway Police claimed to have arrested a total of 43,84 accused for their involvement in violating rules and laws and also registered about 3,803 cases against them in eight railway divisions in one-and-a-half years.
“Around 688 cases were registered in Peshawar Division, 584 in Rawalpindi, 11.03 in Lahore, 369 in Mughalpura workshops, 378 in Multan, 238 in Sukkur, 365 in Karachi and 78 in Quetta Division,” they added.
They said that a railway police help desk has been set up at all major railway stations across the country and the performance of the railway police has been quite satisfactory for the past year. Regarding the performance of the railway police, they said: “The police perform their tasks effectively despite limited resources, and the performance of the railway police will continue to improve to an optimal level over the next year.”
