LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has criticized reports that white-ball captain Babar Azam and wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwa have been dropped from the middle contract category following an early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.
According to local media reports, the aforementioned duo may lose their Category A status with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after defeats against USA and India despite wins over Canada and Ireland.
King, speaking at an air sports event, said that maintaining or reducing players’ salaries would not be successful.
“This is beyond me. Cricketers should be paid the same simple amount. Their careers are limited and the PCB has a lot to give to cricketers,” he said.
“This is a fantastic problem where you reduce or withhold the wages of others as a punishment,” he said.
He said it was counterproductive to punish players by reducing their wages and called the talks a “knee-jerk” move that did not improve the club’s standards.
“As I said earlier, it stops and you can’t raise the standard by increasing or decreasing the cricketer’s salary,” he said.
