India captain Rohit Sharma said on Wednesday, June 5, that the team is facing pressure to finish the ICC Trophy race ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Ireland.
India’s last ICC win came back in 2013 when they beat England to win the Champions Trophy. Since then, India have reached the final 5 times in all three formats of the game, the last being a crushing loss to Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Rohit said he wants to play his game and help the rest of the side gel as a team. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Indian captain said he would not be looking at the bigger picture.
“I have thought about everything,” said Rohit, “Now I will play my game and help the team as much as possible and bring everyone together to play as a team. This is my main focus. I am not looking at the big picture. Don’t think that kind of thinking will help , staying in the moment and emphasizing the important things at the same time is what I will focus on.”
The Indian skipper expected too much from him and said he did not want to take it one game at a time. Rohit said that he and the team did not want to think too much and put pressure on themselves.
I also believe they will make the right call. But I think it’s important not to look too far ahead. Think about what we have to do tomorrow,” said Rohit. Play a good game and go from there.”
