NEW DELHI: India captain Rohit Sharma revealed his plan for Test and ODI cricket after retiring from T20Is and said he will be in action for a while.
Sharma was named India’s captain across formats after Virat Kohli stepped down in 2021 and played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final and the Test World Cup before eventually winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.
After India’s triumph in Bridgetown, Sharma confirmed that he was calling time on his T20I career but did not say anything about how long he would be in action in the other two formats.
Two weeks after lifting the World Cup, Sharma has confirmed that he has no plans to retire from ODI and Test cricket anytime soon as everyone will see him play “for a while”.
“I just said it, I’m not looking that far ahead. Obviously, you will see me play for some time,” Rohit said when asked about his plans once he is done with cricket during the United States (US) event.
The hitman also spoke about the T20 World Cup final against South Africa where the match was almost out of India’s reach as the Proteas required 30 off 30 after Heinrich Klaasen’s impressive half-century.
“I was completely blank because I don’t think too far ahead. I focus on the situation. It was important for all of us to stay calm and carry out our plans. So when they needed 30 from 30, the pressure was on us and the five overs we bowled then showed that we did our job calmly, didn’t panic, which was very good from our side,” said Rohit.
Rohit left the format as its highest run-scorer — 4,231 runs in 159 matches — and also holds the record for most centuries (five) in T20 internationals. He has won two T20 World Cup titles: the inaugural one as a player in 2007 and now as captain in 2024.
