NEW DELHI: Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah has confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) and Champions Trophy 2025.
Sharma recently ended India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought and won the T20 World Cup as the Blues beat South Africa in a thrilling final in Bridgetown.
Sharma was named India’s captain in 2021 after Virat Kohli stepped down and since then the Blues have lost to Australia twice in the 2021-23 WTC final and the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Shah has now revealed that India will continue to play in both formats under captain Sharma, who along with Kohli will be out of T20Is after skipping the T20 World Cup.
“I am confident that Rohit Sharma will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy under his captaincy,” Shah said in a video shared with the BCCI.
India’s T20 World Cup win was dedicated to late head coach Rahul Dravid and the final match to Sharma, Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja as all three retired from T20Is.
“Congratulations to Team India for this historic win. This is our third final last year. We lost in June 2023. World Test Cup final in month November 2023 “After ten wins, we won the heart, but we didn’t win the cup.”
“I said in Rajkot in June 2024 that we will win hearts, win trophies and fly the flag for India, so did our captain.
“I thank Suryakumar Adadaw, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya for their contribution. After this victory, the next round is the WTC final and the Champions Cup. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, I am confident that I will win both these tournaments.”
