LAHORE: A blanket ban has been imposed on the production, distribution and trade of plastics in Pakistan’s largest province, Punjab, Chief Minister Marryum Aurangzeb said.
The minister said at an event held in the provincial capital on the occasion of World Environment Day, “Now, plastic bags have been banned in the first phase. It is the government’s policy to ban plastic bags.”
The minister added that the government will take action against plastic and tire burners.
The development comes after the provincial government in April declared plastic as a source of cancer and other diseases.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed her views on the government’s decision and said that the plastic ban policy will be strictly enforced, especially in hotels, restaurants and canteens.
Emphasizing the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and human health, he said the ‘no plastic’ campaign was aimed at reducing environmental pollution and promoting eco-friendly initiatives.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who took to the social media platform X, his former Twitter account, said on the occasion of World Environment Day that a concerted effort is needed to preserve and protect our environment not only for the well-being of people but also for society. survival of the planet. .
“Of course, we can make a significant impact on the health and sustainability of our environment by taking proactive steps to reawaken, revive, revive and replenish depleted water resources, and repair and restore degraded soils,” he said.
“Let’s take this responsibility together and work towards a better and more sustainable future for our planet […] it’s time to act,” he said.
