Islamabad: The Shaheed Bhutto Foundation marked Minorities Day with a commitment to unity, tolerance, and the protection of minority rights. The event, held at SZABIST Campus Islamabad, brought together leaders from different faiths and backgrounds to emphasize the importance of diversity as a strength for the nation.
Asif Khan, CEO Shaheed Bhutto Foundation spoke at the event, reaffirming his longstanding support for minority communities. He stated, “The oppressed communities, including Hindus, Ahmadis, and transgender individuals, must be protected. The PPP has always maintained a clear stance on celebrating and safeguarding the rights of minorities.”
Ms. Shagoofa Jamal, an advocate for interfaith harmony, highlighted the importance of unity in diversity. She remarked, “All religions are like the rays of the same sun. They all preach the lessons of unity and love. Let’s make diversity our strength and ensure justice for all.”
Father Sarfaraz Simon, representing the Christian community, acknowledged the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for its moderate stance and efforts in celebrating such significant days. He stressed the need for the implementation of the report by Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani to ensure the protection of minority rights. “Our national heroes should also be included in the curriculum, reflecting the contributions of all communities,” he added.
Amir Jeewa, pointed out the unfulfilled promises made during the Pakistan Movement, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. “What has transpired is contrary to the ideals expressed in Jinnah’s speeches. I commend the PPP for consistently supporting minority rights and passing relevant legislation. True change will only come when the attitudes in Pakistan shift towards inclusivity.”
Dr. Ramesh Vankwami emphasized the symbolism in Pakistan’s flag, where the green represents all communities, and the white symbolizes peace. He noted, “A good man is not necessarily a good religious leader. Every religion teaches love and respect, and this should be the guiding principle for all.”
Mr. Farhatullah Babar, in his address, attributed the lack of justice in religious matters to the absence of tolerance. “When one believes that they alone possess the totality of truth, tolerance diminishes. There are injustices both within majority communities and against minorities. It is imperative to address these issues to create a just and inclusive society.”
The Shaheed Bhutto Foundation reiterates its commitment to promoting an inclusive Pakistan where the rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious or ethnic background, are respected and upheld. The event concluded with a call to action for the government and society to work together in fostering a culture of tolerance and mutual respect.
