KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi believes that retired pacer Mohammad Amir can still make a comeback to the national team.
The 31-year-old had a decent ninth season in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) while representing Quetta Gladiators. He took ten wickets in nine innings at an economy of 8.41.
While talking to a local news channel, Afridi mentioned that Amir falls in the category of Pakistan’s best pacers despite not having played international cricket for the last four years.
“Amir can easily make his way into the Pakistan team today as well. He falls in the category of Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi. There is still cricket left in Amir and he should play for Pakistan,” Afridi said. .
In Eliminator 1, Amir bowled a spell of 2-20 in four overs but his team lost to Islamabad United.
During the commentary, former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis said that Shaheen Shah Afridi should look at Amir’s spell against Islamabad United.
“I hope Shaheen Afridi is watching because I think he needs to do it more often. Because early on, if [the ball] doesn’t swing, you just hit that length,” said Waqar Younis.
Ramiz Raja also praised Amir’s over, saying that he forced the batsmen to be ambiguous due to his excellent length throughout the over.
“This was really well bowled, look at the length. He spotted the length and kept pounding the ball there, forcing the batsman to be in two minds,” said Ramiz Raja while watching a replay of Amir’s first match against Islamabad.
It should be noted that Amir announced his retirement in December 2020. He has played in franchise leagues around the world and has repeatedly said that he has no plans to return to international cricket.
