Former Pakistan captain and popular batsman Shahid Afridi was on Friday appointed as the ambassador for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.
He joins India’s Uvvraj Singh, ‘World Boss’ Chris Gayle and Usain Bolt, the fastest man on Earth, as ambassadors for the mega event.
Afridi led Pakistan to the T20 World Cup in 2009 and was instrumental in their run to the final in 2007.
“From being a racing player in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of my favorite career moments have come from racing at this stage.
“I witnessed the India vs. Pakistan match on June 9. One of the greatest rivalries in sports, and New York will be the perfect stage for this unlikely matchup between two great teams.”
Afridi was also named Man of the Match in the semi-final against South Africa and in the 2009 final against Sri Lanka.
“Shahid has played in six ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, two of them as captain and played man of the match when he won the trophy in 2009, so it would be great if he could join our team of ambassadors,” he added. ICC Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Claire Furlong.
“He is a global fan and, along with Yuvvraj Singh, Chris Gayle and eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, will bring fans closer to the action ahead of the biggest T20 World Cup ever.”
The T20 World Cup 2024 will begin on June 1 in the United States and West Indies.
