Islamabad: NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has predicted heavy rainfall in several parts of the country till July 9.
The affected areas include the north-eastern part of Punjab, especially the eastern riverine region, Potohar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), southern Sindh, Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
It is estimated that moderate to heavy rainfall may lead to urban flooding and cause rapid rise of water in the nullahs, causing flash floods in the northern areas of Punjab (Salkot), KPK and AJK. In addition, this rainfall is expected to cause high flow rates in the eastern rivers. The Sutlej River is expected to experience a low flood level of about 50,000 cubic meters, while the Kabul River is expected to reach a moderate level of about 95,000 cubic meters.
“This situation is expected until July 9. Heavy rains can also cause additional releases from Indian reservoirs like Salal, Bhakra and Pong dams, which can directly affect the Chenab and Sutlej rivers. Also, NEOC moderate to heavy rains are expected to cause flash floods in. Gilgit- Baltistan until July 8, there is a risk of flash floods during heavy rains.
Light rain is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, KPK, northern parts of Balochistan and AJK till July 8. Heavy to moderate rains may trigger landslides along the Karakoram Highway along Hunza and parts of Nagar, Gilgit, Diamir, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra and Abbottabad districts, disrupting traffic flow and cutting off major roads. .
NDMA urges all concerned authorities and the public to take necessary measures to reduce the possibility of floods and landslides. Emergency teams have been alerted and resources mobilized to respond quickly to emerging situations.
