LAHORE: Murtaza Solangi, Caretaker Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs, stated on Wednesday that the framework for fact-checking in digital media must be enhanced to combat fake news and misinformation.
During his remarks at the 2nd International Media and Communication Conference here, he stated that 2024 will be the year of elections in several nations, including Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and the United States of America.
He asked the media business to take a responsible role, citing its responsibility to protect the public interest. “Journalism is primarily about defending the public’s right to know,” Murtaza Solangi said.
The minister also stated that the digital age has significant obstacles, such as artificial intelligence, deep fake, voice cloning, and misinformation factories, which make it impossible to distinguish between fact and fabrication.
He stated that, in addition to the benefits of current media technologies, there were also concerns to consider.
He stated that many duties are being completed utilizing artificial intelligence and voice cloning.
The gatekeeper mechanism to verify the facts was a key premise of journalism, but the new media had ignored “the gatekeeper”.
Murtaza Solangi believes that in the age of artificial intelligence, deep fakes, and cyber cloning, it has become increasingly difficult to communicate the truth to people.
