Colombo: Sri Lanka announced their squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be held in West Indies and USA next month.
Dynamic batsman Wanindu Hasaranga, who took over as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain last December, is leading the way as captain. Charit Asalanka, who has excelled in the middle order, will be his deputy in this prestigious tournament.
One of the highlights of the team announcement is that seasoned campaigner Angelo Mathews will be making his sixth T20 World Cup appearance. A key figure in Sri Lanka’s 2014 winning campaign, Mathews brings invaluable experience and versatility to the squad.
Supporting Hasaran in the leadership role is a pair of experienced former captains across formats, Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Mendis, along with current Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva. This combination of leadership provides a great approach on and off the field.
The Sri Lankan team has a mix of spinners and the bravery of Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis. Mathews and Shanaka add depth to the pace department by complementing front row bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madhushanka.
Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Tushara, impressive contributors to Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, whose bowling style evokes memories of the legendary Lasith Malinga.
Sri Lanka will face strong competition from South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal in Group D of the tournament.
Their campaign begins against South Africa in New York on June 3, setting the scene for some exciting matches.
