WASHINGTON: The United States will hold talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to advance the two countries’ “shared interests,” a State Department spokesman said Monday, adding that Washington values its alliance with Pakistan.
“We’ve said before that we value our alliance — our long-standing partnership — with Pakistan, and we’ve always viewed a strong, prosperous and democratic Pakistan as critical to the interests of the United States and Pakistan,” spokesman Mathew Miller said when asked about Prime Minister Sharif’s election to the top post of Pakistan.
“And our cooperation with the new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his government will continue to focus on advancing common interests,” he said at his daily press briefing.
The United States on Monday welcomed the election of Maryam Nawaz, the first woman as chief minister
“a milestone in Pakistani politics.”
“We look forward to working more broadly with Pakistan to more fully integrate women into the country’s political life, economy, including through the US Council of Pakistani Women, civil society and other decision-making spaces,” State Department spokesman Mathew Miller said. in response to a question on his daily news.
