Karachi – A recent webinar titled “Renewable Energy: Advancing Clean Energy Solutions for Pakistan” highlighted the critical role of renewable energy in the fight against climate change, as Pakistan is still largely dependent on fossil fuels for day-to-day operations.
Hosted by the Global Neighborhood for Media Innovation and supported by the United States Department of State, the webinar aimed to spark a discourse that would highlight the key role of renewable energy in mitigating climate change, reducing the carbon footprint and charting a course towards energy autonomy.
Moderated by eminent environmental journalist Ms. Afia Salam, the event highlighted the key role of the media in spreading awareness about climate change. Ms. Salam expressed a comprehensive view of environmental issues by emphasizing that policymakers must adopt coherent strategies in the Pakistani context.
Ms. Zehra Aneek, a seasoned expert with over twenty years of experience in energy sustainability and corporate governance, provided an insight into Pakistan’s energy generation portfolio and highlighted the country’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels, which account for 60% of energy consumption. She highlighted the challenges in developing renewable energy transmission and installation infrastructure, citing political barriers such as the “solar tax” that discourages public adoption of renewable energy.
Mr. Mohsin Babbar, a respected media veteran, echoed these sentiments and highlighted the economic impact of Pakistan’s energy import bills and revolving debt. He emphasized the need to expand the climate change discourse beyond urban elites to actively engage local communities. Mr. Babbar highlighted the key role of political parties, media, and digital influencers in promoting awareness and promoting renewable energy solutions.
Nida Farid, an aeronautical engineer and founder of “Save Joules”, expressed the importance of energy conservation education in reducing energy bills and promoting energy-efficient appliances. She emphasized the need to dispel misconceptions about energy among policymakers to facilitate effective decision-making.
In conclusion, the webinar highlighted the need for policy frameworks that support the adoption of renewable energy sources without acting as barriers. The discussion highlighted solar energy as a viable solution for mitigating the effects of climate change and called for joint action towards a cleaner and safer environment for future generations. GNMI aims to contribute its efforts in promoting renewable energy solutions to combat the impact of climate change on the ecosystem as well as on individual lives through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and policy initiatives.
