SYDNEY: Three children, including three children, were killed after a house caught fire in Sydney early Sunday morning, in what Australian police said was a homicide.
Police said two boys, aged two and four, were treated at the scene but died shortly after being taken to hospital, while a 10-month-old girl was found dead after the fire was put out.
A 28-year-old man was arrested after the police tried to break into the property and is being treated for the fire at a hospital under police custody.
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation and are treating it as an “internal homicide,” said Danny Doherty, director of investigations for the homicide squad.
“At this stage, it appears that the 28-year-old is responsible for the deaths of multiple victims,” Doherty said at a news conference.
Four other children, aged six to 11, are in hospital, while a 29-year-old mother is being treated for smoke inhalation, police said.
