Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Atta Tarar criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its changing stance on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – the founder of Bangladesh – following protests against Sheikh Hasina Wajid.
Addressing a journalist in Islamabad, Tarar pointed out that the PTI, which once hailed Mujib as a hero, had changed its position after the statue was toppled.
Tarar questioned the PTI’s current narrative and accused the party of hypocrisy, inconsistency and opportunism.
The Minister also expressed solidarity with the Bangladeshi people and acknowledged their resilience and courage. He criticized the PTI’s former admiration for Sheikh Mujib and highlighted the party’s contradictory stance.
Tarar elaborated on the constitutional provisions regarding floor crossing, saying that the rules are explicit and must be followed. He said that an independent candidate must declare his party affiliation within three days under the amended law.
The federal minister also addressed concerns raised by two Supreme Court judges regarding the suspension of certain constitutional articles to implement recent court decisions.
He planned to delay the detailed judgment of the Supreme Court, which has now exceeded fifteen days, and called for the principles of proportional representation to be followed in the allocation of parliamentary mandates.
