Islamabad: Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanwar Hussain chaired the Sugar Board (SAB) meeting. Federal Trade Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Federal Secretary Industries and Production Mr. Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry attended the meeting.
The agenda of the meeting was to review the total sugar stock for the 2023-24 season and evaluate the Pakistan Sugar Association’s proposal to export the surplus sugar available in the country after meeting the local consumption needs.
Federal Minister Rana Tanwer Hussain reiterated that the rise in sugar prices directly affects the people. We need to meet local sugar demand before looking at export options to get foreign reserves.
It is proposed to link exports to the stability of sugar prices in the local market. The government and the Pakistan Sugar Association are planning a mechanism to ensure sugar price stability before exporting the surplus stock produced in the country. .
It was agreed to seek confirmed export data from the provinces before making a final decision on available sugar stocks, estimated sugar production from beet and sugar exports.
The forum will review the data in its next meeting before recommending the export of this important foodstuff, which can adversely affect domestic prices and food inflation, especially for low-income segments.
