RWANDA: A man has been open about living alone for more than 55 years because of his phobia of women.
At the age of 16, Kalixte Nzamwita, a man living in Rwanda, Africa, made a major decision that would affect his life for the next half century – to have sex with a woman he would not leave the house if he wanted to.
Last year, at the age of 71, Nzamwita sat down with Afrimax English, the YouTube channel of Afrimax Publisher & General Enterprises Limited, and revealed why he made the decision.
“[Translation] The reason I locked myself here and put a fence in my house is because I want to make sure women don’t approach me,” he said.
Footage shows mud houses and solid walls around the perimeter, allowing open space for Nzamwita. A wall covered with a piece of cloth is difficult to see inside or outside the place.
But why does Nzamwita not want any contact, especially with women?
According to Afrimax English, Nzamwita says he is afraid of women because of his “poverty”.
Nzamwita’s fear of women is known as gynophobia.
This disorder is characterized by misogyny and misogyny towards women taught by people in the social environment.
“This is a specific type of phobia. A specific phobia refers to a phobia of a specific situation, object, activity, or animal. A person can experience it through observational training or usually through a traumatic event during childhood.”
However, despite his fear of women, the women who lived around the house helped him live in isolation during those years.
One woman told Nzamwita that she would not allow him to “go near or talk” to the shop, so she would “throw things at the house and give away his things”.
“Then he came and took it,” she said. “[…] It takes away what we have to offer.”
Nzamwita: “My lifestyle is enough for me. I have no intention of having a wife and I’m fine.”
In 2023, Nzamwita makes progress against his phobia by allowing a woman to enter his residence. However, he told Afrimax UK that there were only people on the channel.
Medical Today also states that gynophobia can be taught how to overcome it with the help of mental health professionals who can help you change your thoughts and behaviors to improve the quality of your life.
