SUKKUR: Rival factions of the Sawand and Sundrani clans have agreed to take their dispute to a jirga to end the two-year-old conflict that has left 29 people dead in Sindh’s Kandhkot and Gotki districts.
A large group of politicians, influential people, elders from various communities and social activists met Dr. Tariq Sawand and Dr. Ali Nawaz Sawand, elders of the Sawand community.
Pakistan Peoples Party Leader MNA Syed Hursheed Ahmad Shah, MPA Sardar Mehboob Ali Khan Bajrani, MNA Aijaz Khan Jakhrani, MPA Sher Muhammad Mugheri, Bharchondi Sherif Miri Abdul Khaliq Qadri, District Chairman Kashmore Mir Gul Muhammad Khan Jak Kalpar Bugti, Pir of Ghpur, Syed Muhammad Shah, Syed Bashir Ahmad Shah, Amrot Sharif’s pir, Syed Faizur Rehman Geelani, Sardar Liaquat Khan Malik, Manzoor Ahmad Soomro and others asked the Sawand brothers to settle the dispute with the Sundranis through a jirga.
Dr. Tariq Sawand and Dr. Ali Nawaz Sawand agreed to end the ongoing hostilities between the warring parties and resolve it through a jirga to be presided over by Sardar Ali Gohar Khan Mahar at the Gohar Palace in Khangarh, Gotki on July 4.
According to reports, a ceasefire has been declared between the warring parties until a jirga is held. The cause of Sawand-Sundrani is the Karo-Kari conflict and the murder of Prof. Ajmal Sawand was decided separately.
Prof Ajmal Sawand’s brother, Dr Tariq Sawand, said they have always stayed away from controversies and never tried to add fuel. “We are aware and we do not want to lose any more lives,” he said.
This conflict has killed 29 people so far. On the side of the Sawands, Prof. Ajmal Sawand, 11 on the side of the Sundranis, three of the Malik community and one of the Thaem people, were killed in the clash.
