SYDNEY: Australian Test batter Usman Khawaja on Monday opened up about Babar Azam leading Pakistan forward after the 2024 T20 World Cup challenge.
Pakistan failed to qualify for the Super 8s event, which led to criticism of Azam’s captain.
However, Khawaja has backed white-ball cricket captain Azam to lead the Pakistan team, which he feels comfortable with.
“It’s Babar Azam’s decision to be the captain, if he can, he should,” Khawaja said at an event in Melbourne on Monday.
Khawaja admitted that there is a lot of talent in Pakistan but said that lack of consistency is hurting the Men in Green.
“From the outside, Pakistan cricket is constantly changing. The selection committee, staff and players are constantly changing. This situation is difficult because stability is very important. Without stability, it is difficult for players to perform. “Pakistan cricket team has never seen stability,” he said.
Notably, in the first two matches of the tournament, Pakistan lost to the USA and India, despite having a game in hand.
After back-to-back losses, the Green Shirts’ chances of advancing to the Super 8s dwindled and depended on the United States losing to Ireland.
However, the match between the USA and Ireland was canceled due to rain in Florida, giving both teams a point to complete Pakistan’s World Cup tour.
Pakistan’s next assignment is a two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home in August.
