Barcelona: Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Wingegaard broke his collarbone and several ribs after a horrific crash on the fourth stage of the Tour of Basque Country on Thursday.
The Visma-Lease a Bike team reported on X: “It was a bad accident, but luckily he is safe and well.”
“Tests at the hospital revealed that he had a broken collarbone and broken ribs. He is being monitored at the hospital,” the team said on its social media platform.
Belgian ace Remco Evenepoel was another battered and injured in a horrific accident.
Injury kept him out of the one-day classics in Holland and Belgium.
Other big names involved in the accident, including Jay Wine and Steff Krass, who were taken to the hospital, and Primoz Roglic was also involved and did not complete the stage.
“We heard on the radio that Jonas had a big accident,” Visma sports director Addy Engels said. “When we got to the hospital, we immediately saw that he was not well.”
Despite the severity of Wingegaard’s injuries, there was a sense of relief that they were not more serious.
Some of the 12 racers in the race skidded into the concrete pit about 35 kilometers from Etxarri Aranatz to Legutio in northern Spain.
