SYDNEY: Australian opener David Warner’s 15-year international career has come to an end after Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in St Vincent’s for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
A win in Afghanistan eliminated Australia from the Super 8 round.
As a result, Australia have an outside chance of reaching the semi-finals, and Warner is unsure if the match against India will be his last appearance.
Warner scored 3,277 runs in 110 T20I innings with 28 fifties at 142.47.
Warner played his last ODI in the World Cup win over India in November and his last Test against Pakistan in January. He has said that this will be his last T20 World Cup tournament.
In his last appearance, Arshdeep Singh took six wickets to replace Suryakumar Adadav. No one maintained their dignity or applauded when Warner left the field.
Pacer Josh Hazlewood said the timing of Warner’s release from his teammates would depend on the outcome of Afghanistan’s match against Bangladesh.
“No one has said anything,” Hazlewood said. “This can be said after [the press conference] [night] before the game, but I think we will wait until after the game and we will recognize his career. It is unbelievable. I will definitely miss him around the team. on the field and on the field – all kinds a great career.”
On parting with Warner, Hazlewood said: “We’ve had a bit of a taste of it. It’s a slow burn with Test cricket and ODI cricket and now T20. Living without him, we’re used to it. It’s always different when you lose a player who’s been there for a long time New Zealand, but we continue.
