LONDON: West Ham were eliminated from the FA Cup by Championship side Bristol City 1-0 on Tuesday, while Newport County secured a dream fourth-round tie against Manchester United.
Tommy Conway scored the only goal at Ashton Gate in less than three minutes, extending the Hammers’ 44-year FA Cup drought.
Conway, who also scored to force a replay when the teams met at the London Stadium, pounced on Konstantinos Mavropanos’ quick back pass to round Lukasz Fabianski and slot into an open goal.
“I’ve been coming here since I was seven and to get the winner is unbelievable,” Conway told the crowd.
Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, and Mohammed Kudus, who is playing Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations, were all out injured for David Moyes’ side.
The visitors had to play practically the whole second half with one man down after Said Benrahma was sent off for kicking out at Joe Williams in response to a late challenge on him.

Tomas Soucek came close to sending the game to extra time when his volley prompted Max O’Leary to make a leaping save.
Bristol City will face either Blackpool or Nottingham Forest in round four.
League Two Newport defeated non-league Eastleigh 3-1 to gain the opportunity to host the Red Devils on January 28.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank got precisely what he wanted when his team was forced into extra time and lost 3-2 to Wolves.
Frank questioned the need for replays, noting that the extra game cut both teams’ two-week holiday break short.
The Bees took the lead twice, with former Wolves defender Nathan Collins and Neal Maupay.
Nelson Semedo and teenager Nathan Fraser responded for Wolves, and Matheus Cunha’s penalty won the game in overtime.
